While on your day hike in the forest, you will need the best snack to fuel your hike. Avoid the boring things like pre-packaged granola bars and potato chips. Rather, fuel your hike with these three delicious, nutritious, and made-at-home snacks!

Trail Mix

Making trail mix is extremely easy. When you make it yourself, you know exactly what kind of ingredients are in there. You will not be consuming additives, preservatives, or extra amounts of sodium or sugar. Trail mix can consist of any non-perishable treats. A good basis for creating your delicious trail mix is nuts, dried fruits, and a sweet treat. Almonds, cashews, peanuts and Brazil nuts all contain healthy vitamins and nutrients, making a great addition to any mix. For dried fruits, consider dried bananas, dried cranberries or blueberries. Raisins are another great fruit to add! Lastly, you can add a sweet aspect to the mix! Try chocolate chips, yogurt covered chocolates or dark chocolate nibs.

Energy Bar

To accompany your healthy trail mix, make energy bars! They will give you the boost you need to reach the end of your hike. There is a variety of options for making your own energy bars. To keep things simple and to save time, consider preparing these no-bake energy bites. The first step is grabbing all the necessary ingredients.

You will need:

   1 cup rolled oats

   ½ cup chocolate chips

   ½ cup ground flax seed

   ½ cup crunchy peanut butter

   ⅓ cup honey

   1 tsp vanilla extract

First, put all ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Stir together until it is well mixed. Using your hands, form the mixture into balls. Place the bites on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator or freezer until they set! It usually takes about 1 hour for them to harden.

Sweet Potato Chips

You won’t need those processed chips on this hiking excursion! Instead, make your homemade sweet potato chips. To do this, purchase two medium-sized sweet potatoes. Slice them very thinly into round pieces. Use a mandoline slicer, if you have one! Next, spread olive oil onto a baking sheet. Place the slices of sweet potato on the baking sheet and brush olive oil on the stop of each slice. Next, sprinkle sea salt atop each slice. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake slices for 10 minutes. Flip each slice and bake for another 10 minutes. Remove them from the oven and let them cool. They will be crisp, salty, sweet potato chips, loaded with vitamin A!
