Condiments have the ability to make food even more enjoyable, but it can often lead to excess calories. Knowing a few easy swaps can make a huge difference over the long run with calorie intake, but can also give your favorite foods a new spin. Here are 5 easy condiment swaps that will be pleasing to your taste buds and fitness plan!

  1. Sour cream. Sour cream is one of those condiments that everyone loves for tacos, potatoes, and anything in between. There’s just something about this soothing, creamy, smooth condiment that everyone loves. Next time you feel like reaching for the sour cream, try plain Greek yogurt instead. Greek yogurt is just as delightful as sour cream, but with more protein and far fewer calories and fat!

  2. Ranch Dressing. An all-time favorite condiment for chips and veggies, the ranch dressing. The problem is that it’s loaded with fat and calories. Instead, try dipping your snack into a delicious store-bought or homemade hummus! You’ll cut out several calories and still get a delicious, creamy condiment for your snack.

  3. Jelly. You’re making a delicious sandwich. After applying creamy peanut butter, you reach for your favorite fruit jam or jelly. The issue with jelly is that is loaded with sugar. Instead, skip the jelly and slice up some fresh fruit. You’ll still get to enjoy the sweet taste, without all the added sugar!

  4. Ketchup. One of the most popular condiments for all types of food—ketchup. However, did you know that ketchup is notorious for adding a handful of unwanted calories and sugar into our meals? Try skipping ketchup and subbing in tomatoes, hot sauce, or salsa.

  5. Syrup. Syrup is basically liquid candy. It may taste good, but it adds an incredible amount of calories and sugar to your meals. In the short term, you’ll likely experience the midday crash. Over the long term, it can add to weight gain. Instead, swap out the syrup for fresh slices of apples and cinnamon. You’ll add far more nutrition and may find that you enjoy it more!

Be careful to not negate a nutritious meal with unhealthy condiments! Try a few of these swaps and you’ll likely notice that you feel better about your food choices.
