5 Strategies to Overcome Overeating

Have you ever found yourself tempted by a snack, so you decided to take a little bite of it, only to find that you had finished it in its entirety? It could be a bag of potato chips, a batch of brownies, or a box of donuts. Overeating and overindulgence are a difficult part of healthy eating. Here are five helpful tips to help keep you on track!

Stay Satiated

To avoid overindulgence, make sure you are eating nutrient dense foods during the day. Feeling energized and satiated will help you avoid overeating. If you are feeling ravenous by the time you get to eat, you are significantly more likely to overeat and still not feel full! Once you reach a certain point of hunger, your body will crave calories that digest quickly. If you do feel extremely hungry, drink a full glass of water and wait 15 minutes. That will help you feel less hungry, and you will be able to eat a meal that is healthier than the cravings you were having.

Be Selective

When you are making your selections for a meal, make choices that will help you feel full and satiated. Choose foods with complex carbohydrates, fiber, and protein. It takes your body longer to digest these foods, so your body will feel full longer.

Listen to Your Body

A lot of overeating comes from boredom. When you go to grab a snack, think about it for a few minutes, and drink a glass of water. Are you hungry or are you bored? If you aren’t sure, go do something! Go for a quick walk, do some housework, or read a magazine. If you don’t feel hungry during the activity, you probably do not need to indulge in a snack.

Avoid Trigger Foods

Keep trigger foods out of your home. Overeating happens mostly on your favorite foods! If potato chips are your guilty pleasure, do not buy a bag of potato chips. If you do not have the food near you, you are less tempted to eat it. If you find yourself driving to the grocery store to pick up a bag of chips, try to remember why you are dieting and what you have to gain in the long term!

Think About the Long Term

Indulging in unhealthy foods is an action for quick gratification. You want that to taste the chips or brownies. In the long term approach to living, that bag of chips will only make your goals further away. Think about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Keep inspiration for your goals in your kitchen. These reminders will be helpful when you are having a weak moment of craving.
