5 Tips for Better Eye Health

Dry, itchy eyes can cloud an otherwise great day, even in the winter when allergies aren’t as prevalent. If you wear contacts, dry eyes might prompt you to wear glasses during the day or simply accept the irritation. However, it can ruin a movie night at your local theater or interfere with sightseeing on your vacation. And it could also be indicative of a more serious condition.

Because our eyes keep us in tune with the visual world and we rely on them in everything we do, it’s important to take care of them like any other part of the human body. That means keeping track of your eye health, exercising your eyes, and understanding how to care for them. When you do, you can say farewell to constant dry, itchy eyes!

Set your sights on these five tips for better eye health:

  1. Eat Well - Believe it or not, eye health starts with your nutrients and hydration. Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin E all ward off age-related vision concerns. Eating well and staying fit also reduces the chance of type-II diabetes, one of the leading causes of blindness in adults.
  2. Wear Sunglasses - Even on cloudy days and during the winter, be proactive by wearing UV-shielding sunglasses. Too much UV exposure increases the generation of cataracts and macular degeneration.
  3. Take Computer Breaks - Eye strain from using a computer or other electronics is one of the biggest causes of blurry vision, dry eyes, and headaches. Every 15 minutes, glance away from the screen and focus on something far away for at least 15 seconds. Every hour, get up and walk around a bit.
  4. Visit Your Eye Doctor - Certain diseases can only be caught by eyecare professionals. Seek an eye exam on a yearly basis to identify any problems early and treat them as needed.
  5. Quit Smoking - Smoking increases the likelihood of cataracts and damaging the optic nerve, among other health concerns. Quitting improves your whole body health.

In addition to these healthy eye tips, consider taking a supplement to improve your eye health. If you are concerned about diabetes, try products with the ingredient ChromeMate®. ChromeMate® contains a trace mineral that supports healthy blood sugar levels.
