Recently, a study conducted by the Copenhagen Centre for Team Sport and Health at the University of Copenhagen that was published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise found that playing sports like soccer, especially, helped to improve heart health in men with bad blood sugar levels between the ages of 37 and 60.
Strengthening the heart through sports
Through the course of the research, scientists found that the level of physical activity involved in soccer training was able to improve the flexibility of cardiovascular muscles and increase speed by 29 percent. Unlike other sports and exercises, soccer was also able to improve the contractions, or beats, of the heart by 23 percent. These findings showed that the men's hearts were essentially functioning at the rate of men 10 times younger. In addition to a stronger heart, men in the study who had high blood pressure experienced a noticeable reduction as a result of the training.
Other cardio activities such as running or aerobics have also been known to support improved heart health. However, if the individuals in question aren't the kind of people who are easily motivated to exercise, they may find themselves having difficulty sticking to a routine. Playing a sport like soccer, though, engages players in a competitive spirit to achieve the goal of winning. Since sports are more often thought of as fun pastimes rather than vigorous exercises, they are much easier to stick to once they are added into a weekly routine.
In addition to exercise, it is important to also eat meals that are low on the glycemic index in order to keep blood sugar at a healthy level. Consuming products that have dietary ingredients to help control blood sugar or taking blood sugar health supplements can also keep men healthy and active.
