According to the research conducted by a team based out of the Harvard School of Public Health, their are positive benefits for women who regularly partake in cardiovascular and strength-training exercises. The results of the study were published in the journal PLOS Medicine.
The data was gathered from 99,316 middle-aged women who participated in one of two studies - Nurses' Health Study ([NHS] 2000-2008) and Nurses' Health Study II ([NHSII] 2001-2009). All of the women who were part of the study did not have a blood sugar disorder when the research began. After tracking the lifestyles of these participants over an eight-year span, scientists were able to see that those who incorporated muscle strengthening and conditioning activities along with regular cardiovascular exercise into their daily routine were able to reduce their risk of adult-onset glucose disorders. Participants who demonstrated a sedentary lifestyle were found to have a drastically increased risk of developing an issue regulating blood sugar.
The authors of the study concluded that women who combined muscle-strengthening and conditioning activities with aerobic exercises were able to better maintain their blood sugar levels.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that all Americans hoping to improve their blood sugar health should participate in 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week to maintain overall wellness.
