Choose This, Not That

Choose_This_Not_That.jpgMaking smarter choices in the grocery store will help you make healthy adjustments to your eating habits at home. Next time you sit down to write out your shopping list, be sure to choose this and not that. Check out these four healthy food swaps!

Choose Rotisserie Chicken, Not Deli Meat
  • Deli meats in a supermarket are loaded with preservatives and chemicals to give them a longer shelf life. If you’re looking for a quick, lean source of protein for your salads, sandwiches, and wraps, buying a rotisserie chicken is the best way to go! A freshly cooked rotisserie chicken is a more cost effective option and it doesn’t have the harmful preservatives that are found in cold cut deli meats.

Choose Salsa, Not Cheese Dip

  • Next time you’re craving a salty treat, skip the cheese dip and choose fresh salsa! Store bought queso dips are usually loaded with salt, preservatives, unhealthy oils and fats. Choosing salsa is a healthier option. It has far fewer calories, no unhealthy fats, and you’re getting the added benefit of lycopene which is an antioxidant found in tomatoes.

Choose Plain, Greek Yogurt, Not Flavored

  • Yogurt is an incredibly nutritious food, if you’re choosing the right one. Flavored yogurt packs can contain more sugar and calories than ice cream! It’s important to be a knowledgeable consumer and know what you’re eating. The best way to consume yogurt (and get all the nutrients like probiotics, calcium, and protein) is by choosing a plain, greek yogurt and adding in your own flavors! Add granola, berries, honey, or agave. By doing this, you’ll know exactly what you’re eating and you won’t be surprised by empty calories in packaged, flavored yogurts!

Choose Popcorn, Not Chips

  • Popcorn is the hidden “healthy” snack. When it’s lightly salted, not loaded with caramel or chocolate, popcorn is great serving of whole grain! Chips and cheese puffs are loaded with unhealthy fats, bad-for-you hydrogenated oils, and have no nutritional value. Next time you’re looking for a TV-snack, choose popcorn over the other options in the snack aisle.
