Cut Inches Without Crunches

Some exercises may seem to require more than your body is capable of in order to really hone in on the results you want. But don’t give up on shedding those pounds and cutting those inches! There are exercise alternatives that are low-impact and easier on the rest of your body. No more struggling with crunches!

  1. Chair Reach - Sit on a chair with your knees bent at 90 degrees. (Test different chairs for the right height). Letting your arms hang loosely at your sides, first reach toward the floor with your right hand and bend with it. Keep your butt on the chair. Breathe into the position, then return to normal and repeat with the left side. Alternate sides for one minute.
  2. Spinal Twist - Also sitting on a chair with your knees bent at 90 degrees, cross your upper arms like a genie. Twist your upper torso so that you face the right. Hold the position for 10 seconds, then return to normal and repeat with the left side. Alternate for one minute.
  3. Pelvis Rotations - Ever seen a belly dancer? Their abs are amazing! The dance motions involve pelvis tilts and rotations that everyone can do. If you have an exercise ball, start seated on it. If not, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and bend your knees slightly. Engage the abs so that the pelvis tilts forward and the back is rounded. (The ball will shift forward.) Then release to neutral. Extend the abs and tilt the pelvis back to stick your butt out. (The ball will shift backward.) Additionally, you may lift from one side to the other or combine all four motions in a smooth circle.

Take these ab exercises and make them your own! Remember that repetitive motion and muscle focus is key. If you are having trouble targeting the stomach muscles, place your hand lightly over the area and clench. Do you feel the muscles heating up?
