Healthier Ways to Enjoy Summer Desserts

Slice a banana (still in its peel) lengthwise, and stuff it with almond butter, some dark chocolate, and a few mini marshmallows. Wrap it in foil and throw it on the grill, and in just a few minutes you’ll have a tasty dessert. Or, sandwich some chocolate-hazelnut spread and strawberries between two graham crackers for a healthy and flavorful s’mores fix - no fire needed.

Strawberry shortcake is another summertime staple. Lighten yours up by using angel food cake in place of heavier shortcake. Let the strawberries provide most of the sweetness and try not to go too heavy on the whipped cream. You can also make a lighter version of homemade whipped cream using coconut milk instead of cream.

Ice cream sundaes are a classic summer dessert. You can enjoy a healthier version of the ice cream sundae by making a few tasty swaps. Instead of ice cream, use frozen yogurt as the base. Top it with granola and your favorite fruit to add some extra flavor. Graham crackers, nuts, coconut, and honey also make tasty toppings.

If you’re looking for a quick dessert fix, try making homemade popsicles. You can purchase special molds for making homemade popsicles, or even just make them by pouring the ingredients into cups and placing popsicle sticks in them before freezing them. Simply dice some fruit and place it in your popsicle mold, and pour in some fresh fruit juice. Freeze for a few hours until fully set, and enjoy. For an even simpler treat, dip fruit in some dark chocolate and freeze until the chocolate is set.
