When it comes to getting a good night’s rest, many people try to avoid caffeine-laced drinks such as coffee before bedtime. It has also long been advised to avoid eating sweets like candy or dried fruit close to catching some zzz’s because it raises your blood sugar levels. What one may not realize is that there are other surprising food culprits that should be avoided as well before hitting the hay.

Cruciferous veggies like cauliflower and broccoli are very healthy because they are loaded with vitamins and minerals. They also happen to be made of up insoluble fiber which can take a long time to digest. When you eat these types of vegetables before bed, your body will ‘stay awake’ while working on trying to digest the densities of these vegetables. As a result this can make falling and staying asleep feel quite uncomfortable. Foods with high protein have a similar effect on the body like steak and ground beef. Cruciferous vegetables also have higher amounts of indigestible sugars which produce large amounts of gas in the abdominal area and can even make sleeping painful for some people.

Tomato sauce is another surprising culprit. Tomatoes are very acidic which can aid in indigestion and heartburn. Tomatoes also are made up of an amino acid called tyramine. Tyramine, which is also in eggplant, red wine and soy sauce, is a known stimulant that releases norepinephrine in the brain. This delays sleep and boosts brain activity. This doesn't mean you can't enjoy pasta for dinner, just make sure to enjoy it earlier in the evening, about four hours before bed.

Lastly chocolate, especially dark chocolate, should be avoided before bedtime. Many people think that dark chocolate has less sugar in it than milk chocolate therefore making it healthier. This is true, however, dark chocolate also has more caffeine than milk chocolate. Sometimes as much as the equivalent of 25% of a cup of coffee, which could keep you up for hours. For a better night's rest opt for a hot mug of honey lavender tea instead of reaching for the chocolate.
