Healthy Ways to Change Up Your Favorite Recipes

A nutritious, balanced diet is a critical component of a healthy lifestyle. The right foods provide our body with the fuel it needs. You might assume that following a healthy diet means giving up your favorite foods, but there are plenty of ways to incorporate some indulgences into your new meal plan. By simply swapping out an ingredient or two, you can transform your favorite recipes into more nutritious and flavorful dishes. Here are a few of our favorite healthy swaps:

Sugar is used in a lot of products, including many you wouldn’t expect!

If you’re trying to cut back on sugar, try
adding less sugar to your favorite recipes and stirring in a little bit of cinnamon. Cinnamon enhances sweetness, so you can enjoy your favorite sweet treats without as much sugar.

Butter is a staple ingredient in many recipes, but it’s also quite high in fat. While some healthy fat is an important part of a balanced diet, it should be consumed in moderation. If you’re looking to reduce the amount of butter you use in your favorite baked goods, try replacing half of the butter with applesauce (for example, if the recipe calls for one cup of butter, use half a cup of butter and half a cup of applesauce instead). Your baked goods will still be moist and delicious, but with less added fat.

Salad Dressing is a convenient way to add flavor to a plain salad, but many bottled dressings are high in added fat, salt, and sugar. Rather than let salad dressing derail your healthy diet, try swapping in a more wholesome topping. Add a few spoonfuls of fresh salsa for a burst of flavor without the extra fat.

French fries are a tasty snack or side dish, but they’re usually made with white potatoes, which can cause insulin levels to spike. Try making your own homemade fries using sweet potatoes instead. Cut sweet potatoes into sticks or rounds, give them a light coating of olive oil, and add a dash of your favorite seasonings before baking in the oven.

The next time you’re cooking up one of your favorite recipes, give one of these swaps a try! We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the results. Simple changes like these will not only help you lose weight, but keep it off. Looking for more support in reaching your weight loss goals?
