How to Keep Your Insulin Levels Healthy

Keep InsulinLevels HealthyMany people struggle with losing weight and then quickly become frustrated. From their perspective, they are doing everything right by controlling calories and exercising regularly, but the needle on the scale won't budge. One possible reason could be a problem known as insulin resistance.

Glucose and Insulin

When you eat, your body breaks the food down into smaller components, which include amino acids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and natural sugars. Much of the food you eat is converted to glucose, a form of sugar which is the body's fuel source. A hormone called insulin, which is secreted by the pancreas, regulates your glucose levels. In order for insulin to be effective, however, the body cells must respond to changes in insulin levels.

Insulin Sensitivity

Insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance are on the opposite side of the blood glucose coin. When the body cells are properly sensitive to insulin, they respond by removing glucose from the bloodstream. Insulin resistance occurs when the cells lose that sensitivity, a condition that is sometimes called metabolic syndrome, which includes obesity. Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance typically co-exist, and when they do, your body doesn't respond to calorie restriction and exercise because your metabolism doesn't function properly.

Diabetes

Although the issue of insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance is important to those who are trying to lose weight, it's even more important for another reason. Insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome often lead to diabetes, in which blood sugar regulation is completely out of whack. Whether you have diabetes or are on a path that may lead there, keeping your insulin levels healthy can promote weight loss and improve your overall health.
