Memorial Day is a holiday full of family time, friendly gatherings, and a lot of food. Barbeque ribs, steaks, burgers, jello salads, bread, chips, potatoes, cookies, brownies, ice cream, etc. not to mention the sugary beverages, alcoholic or not. This year, approach Memorial Day festivities with a more mindful approach! By eating foods that won’t weigh you down or hinder your energy, you’ll be able to enjoy the company and activities around you. Learn how to implement portion control during these friendly gatherings, specifically during Memorial Day cookouts!

1) Eat breakfast

Before you go to the cookout, be sure to eat breakfast at home. A bowl of oatmeal with almond milk and berries is a great breakfast to help you feel content and satiated. Eating breakfast will help you feel full and can help prevent you from overeating.

2) Bring a healthy dish.

If this cookout is more of a potluck event, bring a healthy dish to share. That way, if you find that the buffet doesn’t have very many healthy options, you will be able to eat your healthy dish! Bring healthy, homemade avocado dip or a tray of vegetables. These choices are easy to prepare for a large group of people, but will be healthy to munch on throughout the day. If you choose to make an avocado dip, the healthy fats in the avocado will help you feel full.

3) Your eyes are bigger than your stomach.

When you go through the line for the buffet or potluck, consider how you feel. Don’t grab everything on the buffet table. Do you feel really hungry or like you only need a snack? Be sure to listen to your stomach and know how you feel. Avoid overfilling your plate when you don’t feel too hungry. Try to choose lean proteins and vegetables to fill your plate!

4) Watch your beverage intake.

If possible, try to stick to sipping on water. That will help you stay hydrated and ward off unwanted food cravings. Avoid sodas and juices entirely.

5) Be active!

Try to do things that aren’t near the food. If you’re standing by the food table, you’re more likely to graze and snack then if you go to activities elsewhere. Mingle, enjoy people’s company, and try to stay active during the event!

By implementing these tips during Memorial Day weekend, you’ll be able to stick to your weight management goals and still enjoy the festivities!
