Physical fitness is intertwined with emotional and mental vitality. Your physical state affects how you may feel at any given time. Likewise, your mind can hold a powerful sway on your body. Therefore, to be truly healthy and stable, you should try to maintain and cultivate both body and mind. This balance can tip with stress or be more difficult to observe as you age. In particular, it seems that the older someone becomes, the less inclined they are to be physical due to normal body deterioration and an increased focus on preserving mental ability. However, mental ability cannot be preserved at its best without physical exercise!

So, what can be done? You can preserve mental vitality while aging by remembering these physical fitness tips to keep you active:

  • Change every reason against exercise into a reason for it. Depression, anxiety, and stress may work in opposition to any wish for socialization or activity, but each of those states can be made worse by inactivity. Instead, observe when those conditions arise and plan ahead of time when to work out to bring your mood back up.
  • Some mental conditions can be avoided through a consistently active lifestyle. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias may have a reduced risk in adults who are physically active at least 3 times per week for 30 minutes.
  • Socializing can improve mental and physical health simultaneously. Try walking with a friend or challenging each other to miniature workouts each day of the week, even if you cannot be together in person. The support will keep you moving, and moving will keep you healthy!
  • Replace old workouts with new ones. If you’ve been consistently exercising for years, that’s great for your health! But you might be getting a little bored. Stir things up with a new routine. Similarly, if you find that an old workout becomes too hard on your body, replace it with a low-impact alternative. For instance, if you can no longer jog, jog in place in a swimming pool instead.

These reminders and tips are a good foundation for continued mental vitality as you age. By staying active, your mind will better maintain its sharp edge and even reduce the risk of potential mental conditions down the road. Start today!
