Summer vacation is fun, exciting, and can provide a welcome break from our the day-to-day. However, vacations can sometimes make it harder to maintain our usual fitness routines. Fortunately, making fitness part of summer vacation is easier than you might imagine. With a little bit of planning, you can have an enjoyable vacation while staying on track with your fitness goals. Here are some of our favorite tips for staying fit during vacations:

Plan ahead. If there will be any fun events going on during your visit (such as a 5K or walk), register for one! You’ll have something to look forward to when you get there, and you’ll also have motivation to train for it leading up to your trip. If you’re setting an itinerary for your vacation, make sure to allow some time to be active each day.

If you want to stick to your normal gym routine, book a room at a hotel that offers a gym. If you're unable to find a hotel with gym facilities, you might be able to find a nearby gym that offers short-term or one-day passes. You’ll be able to keep a consistent routine, which is an important part of lasting fitness. Another bonus is that you’ll have access to an entire workout facility.

Make the most of the hotel swimming pool. Start your morning with some pool exercises that will help you feel more fit and energized. Simple pool activities like sprinting in place, jumping, and treading water can all provide a full-body workout. You can also use hotel stairways to get your heart rate up.

Tour the city. Many cities offer bikes for rent so that you can sightsee at your pace. If you’d prefer a more guided approach, look into walking or bicycle tours of the area. You’ll get better acquainted with the area, meet some new people, and get a fun workout. Even a quick walk or run through the neighborhood surrounding your hotel is a great way to stay active.

Take advantage of any outdoor activities you can find. If you’re visiting an area surrounded by wilderness, go for a hike or bike ride. Activities such as kayaking, horseback riding, and mountain climbing will get you out and moving while also enjoying the local scenery.

Remember that the key is to work more activity into your day. Even if your only travel plans involve going shopping, you can still incorporate some extra activity. Walk instead of driving whenever possible, take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator, and remember to eat healthily. You’ll have a fun and fit vacation that you’ll remember for many years to come. If your fitness goals include healthy weight loss, LOWAT® can provide additional support.
