An overly busy lifestyle can leave you constantly overwhelmed and unsatisfied. In addition, living like this can have a drastic impact on us both mentally and physically. Let’s take a look at the impact of being too busy, as well as a few tips for staying healthy during busy times of the year!

1. Higher stress

Often times by trying to please everyone, you put your sanity at risk. Let’s be honest, your everyday life is generally already busy as it is. Don’t be afraid to politely decline an event invitation, or share your workload with someone if you feel overwhelmed. Take time to pamper yourself!

Tip: Get a massage, or simply schedule time in your day for a nap! It’s a great way to reduce stress, and reset!

2. Less sleep

There are 24 hours in a day. No more. No less. The daily recommended sleep for adults is 7-9 hours. Experts didn’t just pull this number out of thin air, it’s based on research that shows the negative impact of sleep deprivation. When we are under-rested, our bodies feel sluggish and slow. The mind also slows down and becomes more forgetful and emotional. Put these together, and you’ve got a recipe for poor fitness and diet choices.

Tip: To ensure you get your full night of sleep, set a strict bedtime about 8 hours before you wake up every morning. Then, set an alarm an hour before your bedtime as a reminder to start winding down. A healthy sleep pattern is a necessity that you should never feel guilty of. You will wake up the next day feeling refreshed and ready tackle the day!

3. Less time with friends and family

When we book our schedules to the max, we often miss out on quality time with friends and family. You know the phrase, “laughter is the best medicine.” Well according to mayoclinic.org, when dealing with stress, this is completely true! Allow for time to simply enjoy the company and laugh with the ones you love. Doctors agree that daily laughter can lower stress levels and have long term benefits such as improving your immune system, increasing personal satisfaction, and relieving pain.

Tip: While you’re thinking about it, call a friend and set up a time to meet up sometime this week. Keep it light and fun, and allow yourself to unwind! You deserve it.

4. Food choices

When our schedules become full, we find ourselves on the run, and hey, we’ve got to eat, right? While it’s unrealistic to completely swear off fast food forever, it certainly should be kept to a minimum.

Tip: Set aside time in your day to eat a wholesome meal, preferably prepared at home as opposed to a restaurant. This way, you know exactly what’s going into your meal, and can keep an eye on the nutritional content. We also recommend keeping a small pack of healthy snacks at work or in the car to help keep you away from the fast food or gas station snacks.

5. Minimal activity

When we get busy, one of the first things to get the boot is the fitness routine. While this is okay once or twice per month, allowing this to become a habit can derail your fitness plan in no time! Keeping active plays a huge role in both physical and mental health.

Tip: Strive to keep 30 minutes of activity in your daily routine! You will not only keep yourself on the right path for fitness success, but also may find yourself to be less stressed and more productive and positive throughout the day!

6. Less “you” time

Setting aside time at the end of the day to decompress and de-stress can make a world of difference in your overall health and wellness.

Tip: Allow yourself some time to do something you enjoy such as reading, walking, or taking a bubble bath. Reflect on the day, but mostly focus on how you’re feeling. If you need to cry, cry. If you want to sing, sing! Whatever you’re feeling, allow yourself to release and let it all out. You’ll find yourself feeling more relaxed and refreshed!

Life has a way of filling up, and often times it can be overwhelming. We encourage you to take control and pay attention to your own personal needs! Sure, there will be busy days, and stressful days, but its important to learn how to manage your time based on your needs. Once you start to master this, your overall health and wellness will reap the benefits!
